Ghetto Blaster
...And it had all started so promisingly!
A new James Bond, a new Moneypenny, a cracking opening sequence featuring action and derring-do, and a quick stop off at Q branch before he is set off on his assignment.
A ‘Boom Box’ or quite literally, ‘A Ghetto Blaster’ which fires rockets from a shoulder held device.
A convenient marriage of Q Branch style jokes and a popular craze of the day: Probably so obvious that they felt it just had to be used.

The rocket that was fired from the Ghetto Blaster was an off-screen effect added after the film.
At the time of filming Prince Charles and Princess Diana were touring the studio and the effects crew asked Prince Charles to activate the rocket – the film of which was actually used in the film. During the tour, Princess Diana also hit her husband over the head with a prop bottle – this became a famous still photograph. We have unearthed a YouTube video of the event. You can find vintage Ghetto Blasters on eBay, but also updated versions at regular high street and internet stores, as seen at the links below. |
