Switchblade
Undetectable by RADAR, the Switchblade is a personal glider that a pilot uses to steer until the appropriate location for release and parachute deployment.
The main body of the aircraft was constructed from carbon filament and epoxy fibreglass. It weighed just 50 lbs and had a wing span of 8 feet.
The pilot lies face down on top of the glider with their feet tucked between the tail wings. He uses hand controls to engage a small electric motor that extends the wings. Another control steers the glider using a similar principle to the steering of the parachute after deployment.
Two parachutes can be operated, one to land the pilot, the other to land the glider. In military applications the second parachute is deemed unnecessary and the glider is allowed to crash.
Jack McCormack or Cave Junction and Davie Rogers of Kinetic Aerospace, the people behind the Parahawks from The World Is Not Enough, also designed the Switchblade.
Their collaboration built this and other workable models of the Programmable High Altitude Single Soldier Transport (not as catchy).
The Switchblade has electrically powered retractable wings that control the speed and trajectory of aircraft, which unfortunately only appears in the film for around 20 seconds.
