Diamonds Are Forever Gadgets
Electro Magnetic RPM Controller
“Pressure on the case here [the slot machine] when the desired symbols appear. This causes the rotation of the cylinders to stutter at just the precise moment too...”
This was Q’s explanation to Tiffany Case as he emptied the jackpot from his umpteenth successive slot machine.
Of all the devices and gadgets we have seen in James Bond movies, this was perhaps the most enriching. Financially, at least!
Although it all sounds fairly logical, especially the bit where Q describes how the process causes the stuttering of the cylinders, the slot machine technology has moved on so quickly that even if this marvellous gadget had worked, it would have been obsolete fairly speedily.
The device to tackle and the device to use are unrelated, but put them together... An electronic speed control device has the ability to alter a motor's speed and direction, and also to apply a brake. The first fully electromagnetic slot machine was introduced by Bally in 1963. It was also the first machine that had the ability of paying out 500 coins without an attendant present.
Q's Electro Magnetic RPM Controller is quite possibly the result of a chat over free cocktails in a Las Vegas casino by two geeks. Well, we hope that's how it came about.

How To Cheat a Slot Machine
Monkey's Paw - Tommy Glenn Carmichael invented a device called the Monkey's Paw. This crude device was effectively a wire that was inserted into the slot machine to block the counting mechanism.
Drilling - You will have seen crooks drill into the side of a lot machine in films. There is always a device that is inserted to enable the random number generator or the payout mechanism to malfunction. It is rare that the method will be revealed. Light Wand - Also developed by Carmichael, the Light Wand was basically an added improvement to the Monkey Wore. This is inserted in the same fashion but the light, which is attached to a battery, blinds the optical payout reader and the sum of money emptied into the hopper would be more. Theft - A lock picker will find a method of picking most locks. Once the lock is picked, a lock decoder key will be made to unlock a bank of machines. This simple method may be crude, but it is also the most effective way of robbing slot machines. Coin Manipulation - Placing a coin on a wire or piece of string and pulling it back out after it has been played, was an actual method of cheating, and not something of comic book legend. Shaving coins was another method of cheating, where a coin had an area shaved which fooled the machine into believing this coin had not been played, allowing the cheat to use the same coin repeatedly. What Q Did - There is no name, because it has not been revealed. The FBI have kept Dennis Nikrasch's slots cheating device to themselves. Nikrasch found a way of cheating the computer chip that controlled the random number generator. With a crew to help, he would open the machine and insert said device. Nikrasch is said to have moved with the times, from the 1970s to his conviction in 1999 and always attempted to stay ahead of the slots. |
Credit Signaller - The above device appeared on the Hacker's Homepage in April 2012, so there is a good chance that if it did work, it may not now.
It specifically affects certain Slot Machines and they need to be coin operated. The makers suggest you hide the device in your cigarette packet, but do not describe what it is or what it does. You could pay the £165 to find out. They also have other devices. |
