Tomorrow Never Dies Gadgets

Ericsson JB988

Picture
The afore-mentioned remote control, with which 007 could drive his BMW, but that’s not all...
It doubled as a fingerprint scanner, with which Bond is able to open secure doors.
It trebled as a 20,000 security system, which operated much like a high voltage electrocution prodder.
It quadrupled as a lock pick disguised as the phone’s aerial.
Bond uses it to demonstrate to Q how to drive a remote control car, and viewers get to cheer loudly as Q says, “Grow up, 007”.

Fingerprint Scanner

In movie world a fingerprint scanner will overlay a fingerprint with a comparison. In reality, this is not the process. The likeliness of smudging is high, what most systems do is compare features, or minutiae.
This will compare ridge lines and splits in those lines and matrix them up with complicated algorithms to find comparisons. So, if four ridge ends and two ridges form the same shape with the same dimensions, they will be compared. If similar shapes and patterns are recognised, a match will be made.
Although you can find computer mice that have varying levels of fingerprint readability there isn't so much about, although it is believed that mobile phones will include the technology within two years. So, kudos to 007 for being ahead of the game with real technology.
Of the technology that does exist on the commercial market for home use, that actually works, is this video door intercom, that is unlocked by a fingerprint scan.
No keys required, the systems has a memory of 80 fingerprints. You can read more by clicking on the picture.

Stun Gun

The two main varieties of stun gun are electroshock weapons, which momentarily incapacitates a person, and a directed energy weapon, which emits energy and can cause unconsciousness. 007 used a weapon based on the former.
Although the technology exists, it is understandably not a commercially available product.
However, the photo below shows a confiscated device disguised as a mobile phone. During 2012 and 2013 the UK police force and border control guards have been busying themselves with the confiscation of such Chinese imported devices that are said to be up to 24 times as powerful as the police's own Tasers. There are an estimated 10,000 mobile phone stun guns on Britain's streets.
